Now that Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea have begun their Points Choice program — where you can cruise with any of the three lines while still building points on just one — there is no time like the present to branch out and try the other sister cruise lines. You might be wondering: which cruise line is actually right for you?
We have spent a lot of time thinking about this ourselves. Until recently, our family had been loyal strictly to Royal Caribbean. Then we cruised on Celebrity Beyond in October of 2025 and really enjoyed it. As a travel advisor, I have also begun booking clients on Silversea and can clearly see the appeal. The bottom line is that the cruise line you choose depends on who you are, what you want from your vacation, and how much you want to invest.
Royal Caribbean
Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line in the world and the one most people picture when they think of a cruise ship. Icon of the Seas, their newest ship, carries up to 7,600 passengers and features waterslides, multiple pools, an ice rink, go-karts, a zip line, and an entire neighborhood dedicated to families with young children. If you want the most onboard entertainment and amenities for the dollar, Royal is hard to beat.
Who Is Royal Caribbean For?
Royal Caribbean is the best choice if you:
- Are traveling with kids or a multigenerational group
- Want the most onboard activities and entertainment options
- Prefer a larger ship with something for everyone
- Are budget-conscious and want a wide range of pricing options
- Are new to cruising and want the full "big ship" experience
Pros
Enormous variety of onboard activities, excellent family programming, strong loyalty program, wide price range, biggest ships in the world
Cons
Can feel crowded on the largest ships, food quality is mid-range, onboard costs (specialty dining, drinks, excursions) add up quickly
Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity is Royal Caribbean's premium sister line, and the difference is real. The ships are designed with a more modern, art-focused aesthetic. The food is noticeably better across the board. The clientele skews a bit older and quieter. Celebrity Beyond, which we sailed in 2025, is genuinely one of the most beautiful ships at sea — it was designed by a Michelin-starred chef (Daniel Boulud consulted on the restaurants) and an acclaimed interior designer, and it shows.
Celebrity also offers The Retreat — a ship-within-a-ship suite experience with its own restaurant, lounge, pool, and butler service — for guests who want a luxury experience at a mid-luxury price point.
Who Is Celebrity For?
Celebrity is the best choice if you:
- Want a premium experience without paying ultra-luxury prices
- Are 40s–60s and want a more refined, quieter atmosphere than Royal Caribbean
- Care about food quality above most other onboard considerations
- Appreciate modern design and art-forward interiors
- Want access to a luxury suite experience (The Retreat) at a more accessible price point
Pros
Significantly better food than mainstream lines, beautiful modern ships, The Retreat is exceptional value for suite guests, quieter and more adult-oriented atmosphere
Cons
Passengers used to Royal Caribbean's activity-packed ships may find Celebrity somewhat less exciting from an onboard entertainment standpoint
Silversea
Silversea is in a different category entirely. This is ultra-luxury, all-inclusive cruising for travelers who want an intimate, refined, and truly special experience. Every room on a Silversea ship is a suite. Every suite comes with a butler. Food, drinks, shore excursions, and gratuities are all included at an ultra-premium level.
Because Silversea ships are dramatically smaller — ranging from 100 to 728 passengers, compared to Icon of the Seas' 7,600 — there is far less crowding, more personalized service, and access to smaller ports that larger ships simply cannot reach. Silversea also operates expedition ships that sail to Antarctica, the Arctic, and other remote destinations that mainstream cruise lines do not touch.
One interesting note for Royal Caribbean loyalists: if you are building points with Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society, you earn 2 points for every night spent on Silversea — which helps justify the splurge if loyalty status matters to you (though I will admit the earn rate feels a bit low given the investment).
Silversea definitely offers a more traditional, intimate cruising experience that some guests see as elegantly restrained — and others might describe as quieter than they expected.
Who Is Silversea For?
Silversea is the best choice if you:
- Want every detail handled — suite, butler, included excursions, premium food and wine
- Prefer an intimate ship with far fewer fellow passengers
- Want access to bucket-list or expedition destinations
- Are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime or milestone celebration cruise
- Are comfortable with a significant investment in exchange for a truly exceptional experience
Pros
All-suite ships, every suite with a butler, fully all-inclusive, intimate atmosphere, access to small and expedition ports, ultra-premium food and beverage
Cons
Significant upfront investment, smaller ships mean fewer onboard entertainment options, traditional atmosphere may feel quiet for guests accustomed to large-ship energy
My Recommendation
"The right cruise line isn't the most expensive one or the most popular one — it's the one that fits who you are and how you want to travel."
In the end, here is how I think about the three lines:
- Royal Caribbean — if you want the most ship for your money and are traveling with families or mixed-age groups
- Celebrity — if you want a noticeable step up in cuisine, design, and atmosphere without a luxury price tag
- Silversea — if you are ready to invest in an experience where every detail is exceptional and you want to go somewhere most cruise ships cannot reach
Now that all three lines share a points program, there is also a smart case for mixing and matching — earning loyalty with one while exploring what the others offer. I book clients across all three regularly and can help you figure out which line (or combination) makes the most sense for your travel goals, your budget, and your timeline. Reach out and let's build the right trip for you.
